Test review DrivOlution MINI JCW Electric
Test report
The MINI JCW Electric is the sporty heavyweight in the MINI stable. JCW stands for John Cooper Works – the M version of MINI – and embodies the brand's pure performance line. The name refers to John Cooper, the legendary tuner who transformed the classic MINI into a racing icon. Today, JCW continues that tradition in the electric era, where instant torque and precision define the new form of performance.
After the MINI JCW Aceman, this is the second model with a fully electric drive. The difference between the two lies mainly in the space and positioning: the JCW Electric is aimed at individualists who want to experience MINI's sporty DNA in its purest form, while the Aceman Electric caters to those who prefer more space and practicality.
We had the opportunity to put this powerhouse through its paces for a week. True to our DrivOlution DNA, the focus was on driving range and fuel consumption, without losing sight of the sporty character of JCW. A balancing act that proved to be anything but easy.

Drivetrain
Powertrain - Spotlight EV platform
The Spotlight EV platform forms the basis of the JCW Electric. It is a collaboration between BMW and Great Wall Motor, combining BMW's technology with production capacity in China. This enables the construction of efficient, globally deployable electric MINI models, with flexibility for future EV models within the BMW Group. The platform is also used in the MINI Aceman Electric. Only the Countryman uses the FAAR platform.
Battery capacity - 49.2 kWh net
The MINI Cooper SE, MINI JCW Electric and MINI Aceman JCW all feature the same 54.2 kWh gross battery pack, of which 49.2 kWh is actually available for use. This ensures consistent range and comparable charging specifications between the models.
MINI Driving Modes and Experience Modes
With the MINI, you have a wide range of choices to tailor the driving experience and cockpit feel entirely to your preferences. The Driving Modes directly influence the driving behaviour – accelerator pedal response, steering feel and acceleration – while the Experience Modes create the atmosphere in the cockpit, with customised instrument display, lighting and sound. This means that the same driving mode can look and sound completely different, depending on your chosen experience.
MINI Driving Modes
Green Mode – maximum efficiency and driving range
Core / Mid Mode – neutral daily setting
Sport / Go-Kart Mode – Sharpest response, ultimate JCW experience. In addition to the driving adjustments, the central OLED screen changes to red graphics and an enthusiastic "woohoo!" sounds upon activation.
Boost-function – Temporary extra power boost. Not really tested during the test period. MINI Experience Modes
MINI Experience Modes - These modes are visually and audibly focused on experience and emotion:
Core: neutral and clear
Green: supporting economical driving mode
Go-Kart: sportieve graphics, rode ambient verlichting, sport sound
Vivid: colourful and dynamic
Balance: calm, harmonious atmosphere
Timeless: classic MINI style with retro accents
Personal: eigen thema via smartphone of media
Trail: outdoor/adventure visuals (for Aceman/adventure versions)
The experience modes are selected via a central button on the round OLED screen in the dashboard, which runs on MINI OS 9.
Regenerative recovery - D/B-stand
D mode: subtle regeneration, smooth coasting
B mode: increased braking energy recovery, enabling one-pedal driving, ideal for city driving
With a little practice, you can 'play' with the two modes while driving. It is more practical if you can control regeneration using paddles on the steering wheel.
Consumption
After 563 test kilometres, spread over 14 recorded trips, we arrived at an average consumption of 13.7 kWh/100 km. Based on the usable battery capacity, this translates to a theoretical driving range of 359 kilometres*. The average outside temperature was 14°C.
The test drives were conducted in a variety of conditions to obtain a representative picture of the driving range in practice..
8 trips (57%) took place on the motorway,
5 trips (36%) in suburban environment,
and 1 trip (7%) in the city.
In addition, there was also variation in driving modes.:
10 trips (72%) were driven in Green mode, aimed at maximum efficiency,
2 trips (14%) in the Core-modus, that offers a balance between comfort and dynamism,
and 2 trips (14%) in the Go-kart-modus, where performance takes precedence over energy consumption.
Despite the fact that the test focused on motorway driving – generally the least favourable scenario for electric vehicles – average consumption remained surprisingly low. This underlines the efficiency of the MINI JCW Electric's powertrain..
The results show clear differences depending on road type and driving mode.:
The trips outside the city resulted in an average consumption of 13.8 kWh/100 km, which corresponds to a driving range of 357 km*..
Driving on motorways resulted in an average consumption of 14.1 kWh/100 km, giving a driving range of 349 km*..
The city trip delivered the best result: consumption of just 9.7 kWh/100 km, which corresponds to a driving range of 507 km*.
It is clear that the city is the natural habitat of the MINI JCW Electric, where its electrical efficiency is optimally expressed.
? Conclusion
The MINI JCW Electric proves particularly efficient in city traffic and on leisurely country drives in Green mode. In these conditions, a range of more than 500 kilometres is possible. On the motorway or in Go-kart mode, that range drops to approximately 310–370 km.
Those who mainly drive outside the city and choose Green can expect a realistic driving range of between 350 and 440 km under average conditions.
Furthermore, it is evident that consumption and driving range are significantly influenced by the chosen driving style. If you maximise the potential of the MINI JCW Electric, consumption will be noticeably higher..

Simulation driving range (km), based on trip consumption (kWh/100 km), road type, trip length (km) and usable battery capacity (kWh)
Theoretical driving range
We calculate the theoretical driving range based on the measured consumption and the usable battery capacity of 49.2 kWh net. This calculation is a snapshot, but it gives a good idea of the potential under ideal conditions. In practice, factors such as driving style, outside temperature, wind, altitude differences and the use of climate control play a major role. Nevertheless, this theoretical range remains a valuable indication of the car's efficiency and capabilities.
MINI JCW Electric driving range and consumption analysis
The journey analysis shows that the driving range of the MINI JCW Electric varies greatly depending on road type, driving style and driving mode.
?Key insights:
Maximum driving range: in urban conditions, using Green mode, a simulation of 507 km was achieved (Trip 7). This is the most favourable scenario thanks to the low consumption of only 9.7 kWh/100 km..
Minimum driving range: on the motorway, in Go-kart mode, the driving range drops to 313 km (Trip 13), due to high consumption of 15.7 kWh/100 km..
Stable values outside the city: journeys on country roads usually deliver a driving range between 317 and 443 kilometres, depending on the mode..
Motorway consumption: usually around 14–15 kWh/100 km, giving a driving range of 328–370 km.
Influence of driving mode:
Green → significantly more economical, ideal for city and country driving.
Core →on average, with a range of around 317–351 kilometres.
Go-kart → sporty, but the driving range drops by 20–30% compared to Green.
? Conclusion:
With the MINI JCW Electric, a driving range of over 500 kilometres is possible in ideal city conditions. On the motorway or in sporty driving modes, this drops to 313–370 kilometres. Those who mainly drive outside the city and opt for Green mode can expect a range of 350–440 km.
Comparison WLTP/test results Drivolution
Comparison of test results with official figures
When we compare the test results of the MINI JCW Electric with the official values from the certificate of conformity, the car scores excellently. The WLTP consumption is 15.5 kWh/100 km, with an official driving range of 365 km. However, during our test, we recorded an average consumption of 13.7 kWh/100 km, which translates into a real driving range of 359 km.
On a specific test track, we even managed to reduce consumption to 11.7 kWh/100 km, which equates to a theoretical range of 421 km. This underlines how much driving style can influence the result.
However, it remains important to emphasise that these values are snapshots. Factors such as outside temperature, driving style, route profile and tyre pressure have a significant impact on both consumption and driving range.
Compare the MINI Cooper SE Electric versus the MINI JCW Electric on the test track
Analysis of energy consumption: MINI Cooper SE versus MINI JCW Electric
As part of a standardised consumption measurement, the MINI Cooper SE and the MINI JCW Electric were evaluated under identical test conditions. Both vehicles were used on the same test track, using the Green driving mode and with the air conditioning switched off. The aim of this configuration was to analyse the influence of driving style on energy consumption as objectively as possible.
